  تر. [ ت َ ] (پسوند) باید دانست که کلمه ٔ تر که تفضیل است در فارسی با کلمه ای که ملحق او شود در صورت ترکیب افاده ٔ معنی مبالغه کند چون بهتر و بهترین و خوشتر و خوشترین و نوآیین ترین و مانند آن و بتوسط کلمه ٔ «از» در میان او و مفضل ٌعلیه افاده ٔ معنی تفضیل کند، چون فلانی بهتر از فلانی است و در اولیتر و اهمتر و امثال آن محض زایده است چرا که مایلحق خود اسم تفضیل است لیکن چون فارسیان را اعتنا به اصل وضع او نیست بطور کلمات خود کلمه ای بدان ملحق نموده بمعنی مذکور استعمال کنند و این نوعی از تصرفات ایشان بود. (آنندراج ). برای تفضیل آمده چون خوشتر و بهتر و بی کلمه ای دیگر مستعمل نشود. (از فرهنگ رشیدی ). یکی از حروف اسمی که همیشه در آخر کلمات درمی آید و معنی اکثریت و افضلیت به آنها میدهدمانند سرخ تر یعنی بسیار سرخ و داناتر یعنی بیش از همه دانا و بزرگتر یعنی بسیار بزرگ ، و این کلمه از علامات ممیزه ٔ صفت است از اسم یعنی چون در آخر کلمه ای درآید که دارای معنی اسمی و صفتی هر دو باشد آنرا مخصوص بمعنی صفتی میکند یعنی عالم که در اسم و صفت هر دو استعمال میشود ولی چون گوئیم عالمتر تنها دارای معنی صفتی خواهد بود.
